HK148b Aterian Hut Site, Har Karkom, Israel, Gallery 3 -- N and NE Sector c. greater than 100.000 to 24,000 BP; f) hk148b #16a ibxantel

Aterian hutfloor HK 148b, NE Sector, artifact #16a; flint.

Tentative interpretation (James Harrod): Artifact #16a seems to be intentional representation of combination of images: horse or wild ass + gazelle (dorcas?)+ rhino head (?) + vague shape like a human skull. At the angle of this photo--the previous angle rotated 90 degrees--the artifact seems flaked represent what appears to be a gazelle. The arc of the horns and the shape of the head is most suggestive of a dorcas gazelle, facing left, while the arc of the horns also suggests a roan antelope, oryx, ibex or barbary sheep. Another artifact seemingly representing a gazelle was found in the South sector of the hutfloor, see Artifact #2, Gallery 1, image (j).
