Louis Leakey named this type of tool the 'Calico Cutter'. "Bifacial chopping and cutting tool 14-E from Calico Master Pit I (coated with powdered aluminum to reveal morphological details). Diagonal bifacially-flaked edge used for cutting; alternately-flaked bifacial edge used for chopping. Tip worked bifacially and somewhat crushed. Derived from a transport-smoothed chalcedony cobble. An area of the cobble cortex is preserved on the dorsal side (left). Dorsal side also flaked to create cutting edge. Flake bulb on ventral side (right)" [Fred E. Budinger Jr., Calico Project Director, Calico Early Man Site, www.calicodig.org].
